Strong Rock, Steadfast God

05Sep

Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,

for you are my crag and my stronghold;

for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me.

-from Psalm 31

Yet you do not ever know what tomorrow will bring.

What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for

a little while and then vanishes.

-from James 4

For the Lord is good;

his mercy is everlasting;

and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

-from Psalm 100

For almost fifteen years we have been blessed to have a home in Highlands, NC. The last eleven years we have been doubly blessed to have a home that has an incredible view of Whiteside Mountain, which has the highest cliffs in Eastern North America. We have joked that when we first saw this house we wondered if we could just buy the porch that has the view.

Our view of this solid mountain is ever changing with the time of day, with the seasons, with the clouds that partially cover it, and with the fog that literally erases any view. At those times when we can’t see it, we know without a doubt that it is always there.

Living here in the midst of God’s glorious creation reinforces for us the knowledge and the comfort that what ever our short lives bring our way God is always there. Be it illness, family concerns, worries, tragedies or losses, our God is there to turn to, to pray to, and to thank.

Musical Reflection - How Beautiful Upon the Mountains - John Stainer. Oriel College Chapel

Gracious loving Father, nurturing Mother, may our hearts always feel your presence in our lives. May we find solace in your grace. May we see your face in others. May we never lose hope, for we know you are with us. Amen.
