When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
- Matthew 2:10-12
I have a friend in Australia who, in addition to being a skilled psychologist and talented writer, is a devoted mother to two strong-willed boys. This combination of qualities makes for a steady stream of engaging yet thoughtful stories on their antics. Following one recent anecdote, she asked her friend circle, “What phrases are part of your family lexicon?” What quickly came to mind for me is this: “There’s more than one way to do everything.” My husband coined this to help our perfection-seeking son learn to extend a little grace to himself and others, and it’s been useful for that purpose. But the axiom has also served as a valuable reminder to refrain from judgement when one of us, or even a stranger, does things differently than the others might have preferred, or falls short of our unstated assumptions. Recalling that “there’s more than one way to do everything” helps me to cultivate patience, humility and understanding.
It also helps me to have hope. Maybe my plans haven’t worked out as I wished or envisioned. Maybe I am stymied in working towards some desired aim. Being reminded that there could be another way around failures and obstacles encourages me to be more open and more creative.
The Magi, in all their wisdom, were not too proud to do things in unexpected ways. Having been faithful enough to follow that star for weeks on end, they also were willing to heed the warning in their dream, and go home by another path. Joseph, too, followed the message in a dream, and took his newborn son and recuperating wife to Egypt to escape Herod’s wrath. And Mary, of course, embodies readiness to respond to God’s call even when bearing a child before marriage was decidedly not the preferred way to do things.
What surprising dreams is God planting in you? What new directions might you consider exploring? When faced with an unexpected, undesired dead-end, what novel possibilities might emerge, if only you are willing to be open-minded and flexible?
Musical Reflection - Home By Another Way - James Taylor
O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you know by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; though Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirt, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
