Take nothing for their journey except a staff…

12Mar
Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.’ So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
-Mark 6:6-13

In the reading above, Jesus calls his new disciples to come and follow him. He specifically orders them to ‘take nothing for their journey except a staff…’ This part of the message has always made me think. Do I have that kind of faith? Would I pick up everything, and do as I was told and just listen, or would I check my daily planner and ask exactly how long are you talking and where? Would I be able to take nothing with me? Then I think about all the things I stick in my purse just to go out for an afternoon of back-to-back kids’ sports and activities, much less for a weekend trip.

How awesome that the disciples had such faith to wholeheartedly trust and go out to spread Jesus’s message! Please help me to keep my ears open and my focus on Christ so I will not miss the opportunities around me to do the same.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the gift of your son, Jesus Christ. Thank you also for the blessing of his disciples that listened to their calling and took nothing and followed our Savior. Please help us to listen and be willing to share God’s good news all around us. Amen.
