The Christian journey is an individual journey.

20Nov
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” and when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
- Matthew 17:1-9

The Christian journey is an individual journey. If you are reading this meditation, you may be looking for comfort, strength, or perhaps insight into Jesus’ teachings, and how they may help you with a particular struggle you are having this day.  The story of the transfiguration is a mystery, confusing to me, as are many of the parables and various moments in Jesus’ life. The disciples were simple people, no different from you and me. They were confused. Peter, James, and John were Jesus’ closest friends. He needed close friends, as we do, and Jesus’ friends often didn’t understand him and had to ask him to further explain what He meant, what exactly was going on. I have studied Jesus most of my life, and I continue to wonder why Jesus said various things, did odd things, things I still do not understand. One such question I have is insignificant, but, on the way back down the mountain, he added “oh, and by the way, tell no one about this.” Why did he say that? It adds to the mystery for me.

Trinity offers many avenues to learn more, delve deeper into Jesus’ life and teachings. Whether you join a prayer group, an EFM study group, a more casual Sunday morning lesson group, or just listen closely to our fabulous priests who are there to help us see Jesus more clearly. The church is there for all to listen and learn among others who share our search and offer friendship when we need it, just as Peter, James, and John did from and for Jesus.

As we approach Thanksgiving, may we remember to always give thanks for our friends and the people who worship openly with us, who are there for us as we try to understand our life. Guide us with your wisdom and patience so that we may strengthen our faith in you and be assured of your love for us. Amen.
