The Fig Tree in the Vineyard

05Nov
Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” He replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.” ’
-Luke 13: 6 – 9

A parable is an extended analogy, and because today is election day, I cannot help myself: I feel compelled to draw an analogy between this ancient lesson told by our Savior and today’s national election.

The owner of the vineyard has a different perspective than his gardener. The owner rightfully expects all his assets to bear fruit, while the gardener, in his role as an agricultural scientist, offers expert (hopefully) advice to encourage the owner’s garden to flourish. Are they listening to each other? Can they work together to meet the needs of those depending on them? Are we working together as a society to create God’s kingdom?

I think Jesus might have told it as a way of encouraging us to listen to the gardener that is within each of us. Nourish change with diligence and love. The changes worth waiting for require patience and may not take place along the timeline we expect.

We pray that we may use our differing talents to bring your kingdom on earth to fruition. We acknowledge that the process itself is as important as its outcome. We must hear each other and work for others to find a voice in bringing your kingdom to its full promise. We ask this in Your Holy Name, Amen.
