Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit.
All day long they twist my words, all their schemes are for my ruin.
-Psalm 56:1 (NIV)
I recently read an interesting book “Why Buddhism is True” by Robert Wright, which is perhaps an odd reading choice for a Christian. The book examines Western, secular Buddhist practices which exclude the traditional beliefs of karma, rebirth and reincarnation. Secular Buddhism practices emphasize how we might enrich our lives and those of others, how we might mindfully deal with our internal emotions as well as other humans, and strive to act with kindness, ethics and goodwill towards ourselves and others.
The Four Noble Truths of Buddhism are:
Task #1: Accept and understand that human life is filled with dissatisfaction and suffering.
Task #2: Recognizing and letting go of the reflexive human reactions and patterns
Task #3: Experience freedom and lightness
Task #4: Act for the benefit of oneself and all living beings
How does this relate to today’s readings?
Psalm 56 speaks of personal persecution:
“Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit.
All day long they twist my words, all their schemes are for my ruin.”
Psalm 57 also addresses God’s mercy and praise for him:
“Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge…
Awake, my soul! Awake my harp and lyre!
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over the earth.”
Human life can be filled with suffering, and it is only human for us to react negatively to such. It’s not easy to be light of heart and beneficent to others. But I think that striving towards The Four Noble Truths could make us better Christians.
Trust in God, knowing that suffering is not permanent. Have faith that a better day is ahead. Try to live in a way that benefits you and others equally. How very Christian!

In everything, do unto others what you would have them do to you. Amen.
