The more we give…

01Aug
Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

- Luke 12:32-34

Luke places a special emphasis on Jesus' instructions to sell our possessions so we can give more to charity. In this reading, however, Jesus doesn't require that we sell all of our possessions; he even tells us to make indestructible purses!  Ah yes, how easy it is to rationalize away the clear direction Jesus is giving us — now, today. Direction that can be even more difficult to follow for those who have worked long and hard to achieve economic success (as if God had nothing to do with it!). Yet giving our treasure, our time, our labor, to help others with no expectation of payback is deeply and profoundly fulfilling. Indeed, the more we give, the more treasure (measured in heavenly coin) we gain. And it is a currency we can spend both on earth and in heaven. That is where our hearts should be. Why wait?

Gracious God, we are thankful to you for every green meadow and each drop of fresh water. Help us return our gratitude for Your good pleasure. Amen.
