The Power of Love

31Jul
But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven.
                                 -Matthew 5:44

This verse always reminds me of a story that Henry Hudson told us. A flock that he tended in the delta often chose to reinforce their intentions by stating them in the form of a resolution, preferably a unanimous one. During the time that the hostages were being held in Iran, this lesson was read. One of the stalwart ladies of the congregation proposed that a resolution be endorsed stating that prayers would be offered for the hostage takers. A vote was called. Hands went up, but it was duly noted that one senior member sat motionless with clenched fists in his lap. The proposer admonished him, “You have just listened to the words of our Lord telling us that we must pray for our enemies. Why do you abstain?” The objector proclaimed vehemently, “Because, He was wrong!”

Like the old resident of the delta, sometimes I struggle with how to pray for those who seem to be bent on harming or even destroying all that I hold dear. What can I offer in behalf of those whose lives are guided by violence, hatred, and cruelty? Where do I begin? My help comes in remembering that in our service we pray together for the “Government in this and every land that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world.” Those few words are so inclusive. They encourage me to pray that my enemies, known and unknown, near and far away, may repent. That they may actually turn around, and in so doing learn to, as Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “walk in love as Christ loves us.”

We all recognize the power of prayer, and we all affirm the power of love. Our Lord wants us to call on these amazing God-given gifts and share them with His entire creation. Of course, as always, He is right!

Heavenly Father, grant us guidance and strength of purpose as we remember our enemies in prayer. Help us to keep in mind that, as your children, they are also our brothers and sisters. In Christ. Amen
