The Snowy Sabbath

22Jan
Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, ‘Come forward.’ Then he said to them, ‘Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?’ But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.
-Mark 3:1-6

It seems to me that understanding sabbath has always been a challenge for people of faith. Especially in the year 2025 when the world continues to show signs of stress, division, infighting, and communication overload. Does sabbath, or the idea of taking time for oneself actually exist anymore?

As I write this reflection, the citizens of New Orleans and south Louisiana have been forced into a sabbath as we are experiencing a very unusual weather event. Not one where we have to board up windows or evacuate a coming hurricane, but a snow storm that is currently shutting down our city. Yes, when it is all said and done, we should have about six inches of snow! People are inside enjoying the stunning view from their window, while many are in the yard with kids and dogs taking time to enjoy life again. I’m sure many will stop and thank God they have a roof over their head and a warm bed to sleep in. And isn’t that what sabbath is all about? Pulling back from our crazy world, stopping to say thank you, and remembering to breathe? We desperately need Sabbath in today's world. So wherever you live, no matter if it’s sunny or snowy, mild or freezing, please remember to take sabbath time and thank God for your many blessings.

Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with all its marvelous order, its atoms, worlds, and galaxies, and the infinite complexity of living creatures: Grant that, as we probe the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know you more truly, and more surely fulfill our role in your eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
