The heavens are telling the glory of God;
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
-Psalm 19:1–4
What is your favorite psalm? So I was asked last week. On the one hand, I wanted to retort: who is your favorite child? On the other hand, as I answered, it depends on what is going on in my life; what extraordinary mood I might be in today, right now.
For, truly, there is a psalm for every well seasoned moment of our lives - from joy to despair, anger to awe, ecstasy to existential crisis.
As it turned out, I was previously and seemingly randomly prompted by Maria Elliott to write a meditation for this very day. I selected Psalm 19 from the several readings of the Daily Office, and it is now, right now, my new favorite psalm.
I am not alone in my favoritism. C. S. Lewis wrote, in Reflections on Psalms, "I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world". Indeed.
Traditionally understood, for millennia, Psalm 19 is first (19:1-6) a beautiful celebration of Creation; second (19:7-11) a heartfelt thanksgiving for God's gift of the Torah (variously known as law, instruction, order, study); and third (19:12-14) a personal prayer of humility.
This last verse is the wise preface of many sermons, as it should be, for any one of us who is brave enough to spiritually counsel another. It worked well for The Melodians (link below).
"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." (19:14)
Musical Reflection - The Melodians - "Rivers of Babylon"
O heavenly Father, who has filled the world with beauty:
Open our eyes to behold your gracious hand in all the universe;
that, rejoicing in your whole creation, we may learn to serve
you with gladness; for the sake of him through whom all
things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
