Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives’ tales. Train yourself in godliness, for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
-1 Timothy 4:7-8
Timothy is in Ephesus, and Paul is writing to encourage him amid the false teachings and distractions surrounding the church there. Paul urges Timothy to stay focused on the teachings of Christ and to be intentional about the life of faith.
What strikes me in this passage is Paul’s use of the word “train.” It is not a word we usually associate with prayer or church life. We often think of faith as something we either have or do not have. But Paul speaks of it more like a practice — something we return to regularly and intentionally.
Training takes commitment. It takes repetition. It takes showing up, even on the days we do not feel especially strong or inspired. The life of faith is often formed slowly, one faithful step at a time — more like walking a labyrinth than reaching a finish line.
I think that is an important word for us today. In our busy lives and uncertain times, it can be easy to take our spiritual life for granted. But prayer, worship, scripture, and community shape us over time. They steady us. They help us remain grounded in Christ. Paul reminds Timothy that this way of living “holds promise for the present life and the life to come.” When we practice our faith consistently and intentionally, we are not only preparing for some future hope — we are also finding strength, hope, and meaning for the life we are living right now.
I have found that the times I feel most grounded are not necessarily when faith feels easiest, but when I continue the practice of prayer and presence anyway.
Musical Reflection - Ubi Caritas - Maurice Duruflé. Early Music Vancouver
O God by whom the meek are guided in judgement, and light rises up in darkness for the godly; Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us to do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
