Unity

09Oct
Oh, how good and pleasant it is
When brethren live together in unity!
It is like fine oil upon the head
That runs down upon the beard,
Upon the head of Aaron,
And runs down upon the collar of his robe
It is like the dew of Hermon
That falls upon the Hills of Zion
For there the lord has ordained the blessing:
Life for evermore.
-Psalm 133

Oh, that we could live as the psalmist David rejoices: in unity!  But in this fractured world and country we don’t live in unity.  There are heartbreaking wars in the Ukraine and Middle East and even in our streets.  This election cycle has pitted friend against friend and made some voters fearful to be public with their beliefs.  One friend told me she wouldn’t display a yard sign for her favorite candidate for fear of retaliation. This is America. What have we become?

But the psalmist reminds us that true unity is the unity we have in Christ and the Gospel makes unity in God possible. The Gospel tells us to praise God, be thankful, have faith and hope, to be sorry for sins committed and to always believe in God’s loyalty and help.

Now that is the kind of unity we can all support.

Musical Reflection - Let There Be Peace on Earth - St. Louis Children's Choir

May you see peace,

In the view from the mountain.

May you hear peace,

In the wave of the breaking shore.

May you taste peace.

In the sweet water from the spring.

May you touch peace,

In the lush grass of the meadow.

May the peace of the divine,

Come to dwell in your heart.

Peace.
