Walk in the Law of the Lord

12Jun
Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. O that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous ordinances. I will observe your statutes; do not utterly forsake me.
-Psalm 119:1-8

This is completely full of such simple yet profound truth. What is the one sure route to true peace of mind and true freedom of the soul? Walk in God’s ways.

There have been times in my life where I have strayed from God’s ways. I have done things and lived in ways that I felt at the time would be so much fun. I had convinced myself there would be no real harm or that I “deserved” these seemingly attractive worldly rewards. In the end they weren’t that much fun. Afterwards I didn’t enjoy the imagined rewards because they weren’t real rewards at all. I only felt down and miserable. I felt, as our Psalmist put it, full of shame. Simply put, my way was not blameless and I was not happy.

Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm. It speaks continuously of the many blessings in life of knowing and keeping the Lord’s ways always as well as the pitfalls of not doing so. It is also full of petitions to the Lord to teach one his ways. There are verses reminding the Lord of his promises to those who keep his ways. It’s like a perfect little guidebook for how to live one’s life. I encourage us all to read it in its entirety sometime soon. Our earthly world can be a pretty messed up place and contains a lot of false promises. This Psalm is full of God’s promises to us; promises that are good and true.

Musical Reflection - I Want Jesus to Walk with Me - Shirley Caesar

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly thine, utterly dedicated unto thee; and then use us, we pray thee, as thou wilt, and always to thy glory and the welfare of thy people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
