With God’s grace and mercy, Peace on Earth will prevail

23Mar
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good
HIs mercy endures forever
Let Israel now proclaim
His mercy endures forever
Let the house of Aaron now proclaim
His mercy endures forever.

-Psalm 118:1-3

When I was growing up Lent was a really big deal. I vividly remember having to give up something I cared about for those long 40 days. I was pretty sure that if I gave up chocolate and sneaked a small square of my brother’s Hershey bar I’d go to hell, or at least spend extra time in purgatory. What a strange fear it was for a little lower school girl.

As I grew up and formed my own ideas about religion, Lent and sacrifice, I realized that God, as this psalmist says, is not a punishing God. He is full of everlasting mercy, deliverance, and trust. The God I know now is loving and forgiving in ways I cannot comprehend, but know is real.

So consider Lent a good time to do something good for others. Bestow a small kindness on a stranger, expecting nothing in return. Stand up for the oppressed. Speak lovingly to those who need to hear gentle words. Make your heart a grateful one.

If you have the time, volunteer with Loaves and Fishes, the Jesus Project, Kairos Prisoners Project, Manning Family Children's, Covenant House…the list is endless and the needs in this community are great. Deepen your Lenten journey with one of these worthy programs.

And last, pray for peace. Our world is very fragile right now, but with God’s grace and mercy, Peace on Earth will prevail.

Musical Reflection - Vince Gill - "Let There Be Peace On Earth" (Feat Jenny Gill)

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever He may send you

May He guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm

May He bring you home rejoicing at the wonders He has shown you

May He bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors. Amen.
