You’ll stay with me? Until the very end.

…And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

-Matthew 28:20

I don’t know about you, but I feel immensely comforted when I know I am not alone during difficult times. Today’s verse reminded me of this passage from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: “You’ll stay with me? Until the very end.”

It truly is a beautiful comfort to know that we are, in fact, never alone. Not during the storms of life. Not in painful situations. Not when we feel like we are facing down a mountain. God is always with us. I should even add, especially during these difficult times, God is always with us.

Right now, I am on a news and social media diet-I wouldn’t say that I have cut either out entirely (although I would like to get to that point), but I notice certain changes in my mood and even my body when I spend too much time on either social media or the news. I definitely feel more anxious, and whether I’m comparing myself or reading about situations that I have little control over, I notice that I don’t feel great.

So what I’ve been working on when I do feel tempted to get on social media and the news, is to feel less alone by drawing closer to God. I will read other devotionals, I will listen to uplifting podcasts, and I’ll listen to prayer music. Or worse, if I do catch myself feeling badly after getting on socials or the news, I’ll work to redirect myself entirely. I’ll repeat God’s promises over me, I’ll write in my gratitude journal, and I’ll pray.

Can you reflect on how you draw closer to God during difficult times? I’m always looking for new ideas-please feel free to email back! I’d love to share your ideas in an upcoming devotional.

Musical Reflection - Poor Bishop Hooper - Psalm 148

God in these storms of life, I feel like I’m one of the disciples hiding in the bow of the boat while the waves rock us side to side. I know you have a plan that’s better than anything we could have dreamed of, and help me to draw closer to you now. Amen.
