Do everything without grumbling or arguing so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God” without fault in a warped and crooked generation.
Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
As you hold firmly to the word of life.
- Philippians 2:14-16
Upon returning home following the death of my beloved son, Wade, I was caught in a morass of grief. Just getting up and dressed seemed an impossible task. Though I was able to pray, my words seemed hollow. It was at one of my lowest hours that I received a call from Macon Riddle. (Macon – truly one of God's children filled with grace and holiness – a constant reflection of The Light. In remembering her a close friend once said, “Her whole life was a prayer.” ) She had called to invite me to dinner at her home with some other Trinity friends. Had it been anyone else, I might have refused, but I found myself wanting to go. A good sign from the beginning.
Seated at the table, Macon blessed our food then asked me a question. “Marcia, could you tell us a little about Wade? We didn't know him, and if we are going to help you through this difficult time, we would like you to share him with us.” I was surprised at my eagerness to talk about Wade. I described my child, recounting favorite memories, and recalling recent suffering. With great tenderness and complete trust, we laughed and cried together. These incredible women made comments, asked questions, and expressed condolences that brought comfort to my soul. It was about loss. It was about love. It was about God. Thank you, Macon, and thank you my precious friends.
Psalm 37:13-14 joyfully proclaims, “I will remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” How blessed we are to have Trinity where we are surrounded by the sights, sounds, and especially the people who show forth the goodness of God every day. This wondrous community gives each of us endless opportunities to receive God's light. It also gives each of us ceaseless opportunities to shine!

Heavenly Father, teach me to understand more fully what it means to be set apart for the purposes of your kingdom. Shine on me, Holy God!
