"Where are you?"

18Apr
The Lord called to the man and said: "Where are you?"

-Genesis 3:9

This is the opening line of the incident after Adam and Eve had eaten the forbidden fruit. God goes looking for Adam and says to him, "Where are you?" Of course God knows exactly where Adam is. He is hiding because he had disobeyed. The real question is whether or not Adam knows his location and what has transpired. And yes he knows he is guilty.

I have wondered how often this question is before us. In our crazy existence do we know where we are and what we are doing. Do we need the voice of God asking us, do we know where we are? Maybe we all have things we would like to hide from God. We certainly know how to hide things from one another. In reality we know we cannot hide from God. But where are we? In our relationships with one another do we know where we are? In our business dealings, do we know where we are? It would be constructive if we can put in our minds this question. God is continually asking, where are you? How do we respond?

Gracious God, help us to remember that you are always seeking us out. Enable us to come to terms with our location, with You, with others and with the world.

In Christ's name. Amen.
